Islands are famed for their attraction to predators. Mallorca is no exception. Much of its' turbulent past is enacted by numerous 'Fiestas' throughout the year. 'Settlers' have also participated in spreading the word. The Michael Douglas Cultural Centre in Valldemossa is one. The audio-visual presentation realistically charts the exploits and contribution of Archduke Ferdinand. Historically, predators were rebuffed by one of 4 kingdoms that ruled the island. LA GRANJA nearby is one and, has been faithfully restored providing insight into the self-sufficiency skills of the populace and their masters (a children must-see). Islanders have an inherent curiosity to discover, as is witnessed by the achievements of Juniper Serra. Visit his birthplace in PETRA to appreciate the fact that from humble Mallorca he and his monks set sail and played an important role in the settlement of Spanish North America.

Port d'Andratx has a lively night life, apart from the wide choice of restaurants, there's Barracuda nightclub and the new attraction ...a bowling alley. Andratx, S'Arraco and Sant Elm are peaceful places, with any action occurring around the bars. In Sant Elm there's usually some live music somewhere. ...In search of more sophistication? Then head for Palma. Summer or winter, there is always something going on that appeals. A really beautiful, typical Spanish city sprawling behind the skirts of the Cathedral (as described in Gordon Wests Winter in Majorca). The wide streets and well-maintained gardens are a joy at any time of the year. There are a wealth of museums to be visited and retail therapy to be enjoyed in the winter whereas, open air markets and evening concerts (open-air free ones at the Parc de Mar and the symphony orchestra at the Auditorium) preceded by a leisurely tour in a horse drawn carriage may be more appropriate in the summer months. Whatever, the local English newspaper "The Daily Bulletin" is on hand (many airlines provide a free copy with incoming flights) . A page is devoted to Whats On, so check it out!
